The flab becomes fab

Everyone likes to tune into happy endings. And who better than Star Plus to vouch for that. Popular characters have been resurrected and revived in its serials if only to appease audience sentiments. So on the one hand if there have been instances of dead men walking, there are also cases of frogs who are actually princesses-incover awaiting the magical kiss.
And now it is the turn of Nikki of Dekho Magar Pyaar Se on Star Plus to metamorphose into a stunner. Here she was roly-poly Nikki, always the butt of all jokes as everyone took nasty digs at her portly frame. In this day of proliferating beauty contests and figure-defying vital statistics, Nikki was a gross misfit. So she is ridiculed, laughed at, and her boyfriend cheats her.
But she is made of sterner stuff. While everyone comes to terms with her tragic death, the truth is that Nikki is on a come-back mode. She knocks off those extra pounds, acquires a dress sense, and then plans, plots, and plays her moves.
In her slimmer and decidedly more attractive avatar, she is also fiercely determined to get even with the world that tormented her.
Was this transformation really needed? “It is not so much her becoming slimmer as much it is her new-found sense of purpose that we wish to project,” says Deepak Segal, Executive Vice President, Content, STAR India. Nikki’s image makeover, says Segal, should not be viewed through the prism of vanity and superficiality. That the serial has touched a chord with the viewers, many of whom have their own physical crosses to bear, is evident from the deluge of mail that Star Plus receives everyday. Some have passionately declared their love for her, many want her as their life partner.
Anusha Parekh of Chembur says Nikki’s story is one she and her friends can easily identify with. Seeing her determination to hit back “is what gives hope to so many of us out there.”
Tonight at eight as the all-new Nikki is unveiled on Star Plus, she is sure to have eager viewers completely clued in to her story.

Bollywood in Singapore, Italy, New Zealand, Hong Kong

Bollywood Singapore Switzerland Italy Hongkong UK Ireland South Africa
Countries woo Bollywood crews for on-location shoots in red carpet style.

Bollywood’s doing the dhak dhak but this time, the backdrop to the heave-ho is zara hatke. Forget Simla, the waterfall-walla garden, Times Square and those familiarlooking Alps in Switzerland. Other countries are serenading Bollywood crews in red carpet style, with discounts, visa assistance and recce tours.

Italy, the eternal tourist hot spot, is now concentrating on wooing Bollywood for onlocation shoots. Winston Periera, Business Manager, Indo-Italian Chamber of Commerce, explains why. “This move was prompted because Indian cinema has now found a global platform and an increasing audience amongst non-Indians as well. Seeing the potential of this new emerging sector, our Chamber planned to expand our activities.” Singapore, Hong Kong and New Zealand are among those which are now aggressively baiting Bollywood which they foresee will form an important portion of the Indian tourist pie. Everyone wants a bite out of this. As Edward Chew, Area Director, Western India, Singapore Tourism Board, says, “India is currently our seventh largest source market. We expect that it will continue to move up the rankings, given the increasing propensity to travel.”

To lure Preity, Abhishek and co into doing the bootyshake in their exotic backyard, here’s the bait: The Film-in-Singapore scheme offers financial support up to 50 per cent of the expected costs in Singapore according to the mileage given, while Italy has introduced discounts upto 70 percent on the hire of equipment.

“Hong Kong,” informs David Leung, Regional director, South East Asia, HK tourism Board, “has set up a film services office as part of its Television and Entertainment Licensing Authority to facilitate film production and act as a one-stop shop for production houses.” New Zealand’s USP is that shooting costs there are 50 per cent of European and US costs.

And Bollywood’s biting. Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai, Rehna Hai Tere Dil Mein, Soldier were shot in NZ, Company and Gumraah in HK, while another 3-4 films were shot in Singapore in 2003-2004. Neera Arora, Trade Development Manager, from the New Zealand High Commission adds that after Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai, even Tollywood and Mollywood came to New Zealand despite stiff competition from other filming destinations like Switzerland. Pereira estimates that Bollywood film production houses will pump in at least a cool US$ 1 to 1.5 million next year for on-location shooting in places like Umbria, Abruzzo and Campania. Howzzat for globe-trotting with jhankaar
beats?

Come into my parlour... How they’re baiting Bollywood

SINGAPORE: Film-in-Singapore scheme offers financial support up to 50 per cent of the expected costs in Singapore. 3-4 Bollywood films shot here in 2003-2004.

ITALY: Discounts on various services like hire of equipment, some upto 70 per cent. Expect an investment US $ 1 to 1.5 million from Bollywood this year

NEW ZEALAND: Markets itself on the fact that shooting costs are 50 per cent of European and US costs. Visa and shooting approvals are processed quickly. Seen more than 100 Indian film crews in the past six years.

HONG KONG: Set up a film services office to facilitate film production. Gumraah and Company among those shot here.

Rock On!! box office report

Rock-On-Farhan-Akhtar-Arjun-rampal

Rock On is doing extraordinary business in multiplexes. Well, you cant expect it doing great business in Bihar and East Punjab. But in Pune, Bangalore and Mumbai multiplexes Rock On, a movie based on ‘spirit of winning’ (just like Lakshya) has registered an awesome 85% opening. In single screens, the movie is not releasing at all, so spoilage factor is less and per screen return will be amazingly high.

I don’t have reports of how other metro and semi metro cities are doing. If anyone has any report of Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Chennai, Delhi, Gurgaon, Noida (should do well in Gurgaon, Noida and Chandigarh) do drop me a mail at krish dot b at gmail dot com.

Indian rock lovers will surely flock into the theatres. Add to that the novelty factor of Farhan Akhtar, a celebrity of his own merit, who has sung some great rock numbers.

Javed Akhtar is a proud man…his son is climbing one step after either.

Taran Adarsh writes

The tremendous appreciation as also the tremendous critical acclaim this film has garnered will ensure a long, successful run for the film. Given its strong opening and equally strong reports, a few distributors/exhibitors this writer spoke to were sure that the multiplexes would increase its shows [from 2/3/4 to 7/8] from Saturday itself.

Sing is King box office: Delhi & Punjab shivering under mass hysteria

Sing-is-king-box-office-delhi-punjab
It could not get bigger than this. No faltu ka promotion (it was heavy no doubt, but no one claimed Akshay’s marriage is in stress because of Katrina), no artificial love story or break up, no accumulation of yesterday’s star cast, no six pack, the original fit, Akshay Kumar’s Sing is King is smashing all box office records with élan and ease.

I have heard that Sing is King is doing extra extra ordinary business in Punjab. It was expected but certainly not at this scale. I heard that the movie has collected 1,02,000 from its first show from one single screen theatre in rural Punjab. This is kind of unprecedented because no movie EVER has collected this much amount (or even 60%) from the first day from the same theatre.

In Delhi, the movie is going super strong. Many multiplexes has doubled or tripled the number of shows and still getting capacity. So, there is no spoilage factor, wherein houseful board for one movie leads janta to go for another movie.

Sing is King box office report: Mumbai rocking

Sing-Is-King-Box-office-report-mumbai
Sing is king (or Singh Is Kinng) is shattering records at cinemas in all over Mumbai city. On its very first day, that is Friday it has collected a whopping 1.13 crore nett on its first day. To put things in perspective, super hits like Chak De, Welcome, Om Shanti Om were also not able to collect this much revenue from a single day from Mumbai.

The movie has taken an amazing opening throughout India. From West Bengal to Gujrat, from CP Berer to East Punjab. It was kind of expected as people thronged into the ticket counter as soon the advanced booking opened.

My personal experience in theatres in Andheri is good. In Sun City it is running packed. So is Gaiety, however 24 Karat in Jogeshwari is not showing HOUSEFUL board.

Sing is King movie n film review, sing sing bang bang

Towards the middle of Singh is Kinng, Akshay Kumar and his band of Sikhs -- played by Om Puri, Yashpal Sharma, Sudhanshu Pandey and Kamal Chopra, along with Neha Dupia and a contingent of scantily dressed dancers in feathers and pearls, break into the song Bas Ek Kinng.

The video of the song has been playing for weeks on cable channels and part of the preview of the film. But to see it on a big screen with the music blasting (as it always happens with Bollywood films), is a treat. More

Singh is Kinng movie review: Sing Song King Kong Halla Masti

The films rests on a very basic plot of 'Good Vs Bad', but the characters incorporated and the treatment given on a lavish scale is what tilts the balance in the film's favour. Also, you cannot discount the fact that Akshay is in his elements right from take one! There is some magic in his body language, a purpose in his every scene, and the desire to excel in every shot. He lights up the screen every time he comes on and spreads the energy like a virus. The man once called wooden I'm sure is having critics and producers who shied away earlier, having to eat out of his hands from a wooden spoon! SINGH IS KINNG is an out and out Akshay Kumar film. The support cast too is terrific; Om Puri Javed Jaffrey, Ranvir Shorey, Sudhanshu Pandey, Sonu Sood, Kirron Kher, Yashpal Sharma and Manoj Pahwa.

Akshay (Happy Singh) is one happy-go-lucky chap with a big heart who always goes out to help his villagers. Sonu Sood (Lucky Singh) another villager is a dreaded gangster in Australia. He makes headlines almost every other day. He is King in Australia and his cronies are his friends from his village Amritsar in India. Happy is forever putting the villagers in trouble with his 'do goo act'. Fed up, a few decide to get rid of him. They decide to send him to Australia to get back Lucky Singh whose ailing parents are longing for him. With him on this mission is his childhood friend Rangeela (Om Puri). How Happy manages to make Lucky and his gang of Sardars turn back from their evil ways is what the film is all about.

There's action and romance packaged to guarantee the best returns for you bucks. Bazmee excels on both counts. Somewhere in between is writer Suresh Nair's humour, which is the film's selling point!

Apart from Akshay, Sonu Sood commands a terrific screen presence. As the King, he marshals his resources well, even his half-blind brother (Mika) Javed Jaffery who turns in a good act. Om Puri is finally seen in a good role. He combines well with Akshay to give the best moments of 'laugh time'. The music is loud and vibrant, in true Sardar style and the characters, keeping the Sardars in mind. What's interesting is that every actor who is not a sardar carries off the get-p so well that it's difficult to distinguish a real Sardar. Full marks to the costume designer who has added colour on the screen to go with the vibrant community.

Katrina Kaif has not much of a role like Neha Dhupia but both the girls offer excellent support. Katrina looking gorgeous whips up some sexy dance moves with Akshay amidst the pyramids of Egypt while Neha with her saucy moves lights up the proceedings in the King's villa.

The first half breezes through without a hitch. Certain flaws crop up in the second; the loose editing of two songs, which appear abruptly between scenes and disappear as quickly, and a sub-plot, which could have been done without. But that is all forgotten in the din of the theatre as the junta go wah wah over their new King!

The North Indians are going to go ballistic while the overseas market is sure to rake in a huge turnover. An out-and-out entertainer guaranteed to bring on the laughs.

Eh picture badi changi hai!

Saif gets Kareena Tattoo, exclusive picture, photo

Saif-Kareena-Tattoo-picture-photo-Karina-images

Saif Ali Khan just got an awesome Kareena tattoo in his left forearm written in Devangri script (Sanskrit). Saif showed the tattoo in Bangalore while doing a rock concert along with Parikrama. The rock concert is on a four city tour, it has performed in Delhi and Bangalore, next comes Mumbai and Calcutta.

Saif Ali Khan was looking happy and he was not hiding the fact that he has adorned Kareena tatoo in his forearm, when asked if the tattoo is permanent, Saif seriously, yes it is.Saif-Khan-Kareena-Tatoo-Bangalore-Delhi-Mumbai-Bombay-Kolkata-Calcutta-Rock-Concert

Saif got this tattoo last Thursday in Mumbai before he and Kareena flew to Greece for yash Chopra’s under production film Tashan.

While giving an interview this is what Saif says to the interviewer about the tattoo.

Question: You got a tattoo done.

Saif Ali Khan: Yes, I did but I am not going to show it to you.

Question: Is it a permanent one?

Saif Ali Khan: Yes, I believe it is quite permanent.

Question: Great, so best of luck for all your performances.

Saif Ali Khan: Thanks a lot.

Saif Kareena to tie the knot, wedding bells soon? Another celebrity marriage after Abhi-Ash?

Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor may tie the knot, according to the sources. The rumor is that Saif who is shooting with Kareena in Greece for the film, Tashan has expressed his desire for the marriage. There are reports that Saif wants the marriage to happen before the end of 2008, only time will tell, Kareena who is peak of her career now (after super successful Jab We Met), would give up her career like Sharmila Tagore, Rakhee, Kajol and likes. Kareena is a calculative girl, I don’t think she would give up her career just like that. True or false, we don’t know, because officially both the actors have denied the wedding news, so we have no way but to take the news with a pinch of salt.Saif-Ali-Khan-Karina-wedding-marriage-Shahid-affair

In the meanwhile, Saif, who is visibly in so much of love with Kareena has tattooed his sweetheart’s name in his hand. He unveiled the Kareena tattoo yesterday while performing in a rock concert in Bangalore along with the rock band Parikrama. (Click here to see Saif’s Kareena tattoo- exclusive image).

Saif it seems now wants to settle down in life. Being a victim of several link ups in the past, the chote nawab, Saifu, wants to get rid of his Casanova image.

Don--Music Review, why Shaan not Sonu

Don’s title track has been sung by Shaan. That’s the topic of discussion today, my dear students.

First, two things that struck me (but did not struck the box office when they released, Alas)

1. Jodi of Shahrukh Khan and Shaan. A complete flop. Remember 'O Re Kaanchi?' Asoka (SRK’s Oscar effort to defeat Aamir Lagaan Khan) did not make people berserk.

2. Shahrukh’s own voice, as playback singer (Apun Bola) also did not cut much ice earlier in ‘Josh’ (Don’t ask me was that a futile and desperate effort from the stammering Khan who was running after the success of Aamir Ghulaam Khan, I dunt know, 'Ay Kya Bolti Tu?')

You will discover both the flop histories are repeating themselves in 'Don'. Why Shaan is preferred over Sonu Nigam (or Nigaam, Niggaanm, Niiggaamm, a la vastu pundit), the guy who has rendered innumerable hits? Some possible reasons,

1. 'Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna' sank and sank. The title track singer (Sonu) can't shrug off his responsibility. You are only as good as your last weekly progress report at the box office. Sonu ( I presume) is been replaced at the very last minute, just before the release of the music. Sonu yet has some time in hand ( I presume), before the release of Don if he can again pulls off another chartbuster from any which film, he may be called back right on the title track, you never know.

2. Sonu-Shahrukh jodi has become somewhat cliché. (Just imagine Sonu in Shahrukh’s lips, (Karan Johar are you listening), 'Haay, tumse milkey dilka yeh jo haal')

3. Shahrukh is aging. Shaan is more energy than Sonu. The aged superstar wants the ‘bishlyakarani’ (you don’t know what ‘bishlyakarani’ actually is? The medicine that Hanuman supposed to bring from the Vindhya mountain)

4. Don is no glorified Ssas-Bohu soap. Sonu suits better there.

5. Shaan is director Farhan Akhtar’s favorite. Right from Dil Chatha Hain (Koi Kahey) to Lakshya (Mein Aisa Ku Hoon) Farhan features Shaan.

What’s Mauj to do with Ram Gopal Verma and Karan Johar?

Ram Gopal Verma describes Karan Johar’s "Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna"(KANK) a Horror Movie

Karan Johar calls RGV’s ‘Naach’ a Comedy Caper.

There may be a secret langoti WWF style wrestling going on between Karan Johar, the clichéd and blunt family poetic guru (who understands women better than any real man in the world, yes, you got that right) and self acclaimed maverick, Ram Gopal Verma, famous for his assembly line ‘Factory’ production, but one platform that brings the two is Mauj, telecom mobile content provider.

Leading technology magazine Red Herring today acknowledged wireless solutions firm Mauj as Red Herring Asia 100 Winner This is an award programme that recognises the most promising private technology companies in the region. Red Herring has received more than 600 submissions and nominations from across countries in Asia.

You must be wondering how Mauj has able to achieve this feat.

1. Is it because...in the last three years it has established it as the numero uno brand in the mobile entertainment business in India. You are wrong.

2. Is it because...it successfully raised $10 million as investment from names like Intel Capital, Capital Partners and Sequoia Capital? You are wrong.

3. Is it because...Mauj has signed an exclusive deal with Miss World Organization as a Global Mobile Partner for The 56th Miss World 2006 to be held in Warsaw in Poland? You are wrong again…

Mauj is a winner only because it has been able to bring in both the seriously quarreling super stars in one platform. Mauj has partnered with RGV for movies like Bhoot, Vaastu Shastra, Sarkar, D, Ab Tak Chappan. Even after committed such a crime (Why Crime? Because akka Mumabi KJ ka ilaka hain. Ask Karan Johar why all the orchestrated bad publicity came to media about Omkara, which released a week ahead of KANK. Ask Karan Johar why again all the orchestrated bad publicity is coming to the media about Ahista Ahista, which released a week later to KANK, so even after committing a crime of partnering with RGV that is, Mauj has successfully brings Karan Johar on board and launched an exclusive range of content of Kabhie Alvida Na Kehna (KANK) through a java application that introduces the characters of the movie to mobile consumers. Along comes KANK ringtones, wallpapers, themes, colour logos, animation, dialogues, video ringtones and movie-based games which are available with all Indian cellular operators.

So, before you ask ‘how dares he’ Mauj has been adjudged as theRed Herring Asia 100 Winner’, If not us, those firangis have realized the soundless renaissance it has created.

The bottom line is, more than Shahrukh-Karan Johar-Yash Chpora camp, Mauj is more monopoly. I am sure very soon it is going to be charged as breaking Monopolistic Restrictive Trade Practices (MRTP) Act.
