According to an article by John C. Wolf Associate Professor of Family Medicine Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine, colon cancer strikes about 30 out of each 100,000 people in the Northeast, with slightly lower rates in other parts of the U.S. About 130,000 individuals are diagnosed with colon cancer each year and more than 56,000 die from it.
Due to colonoscopy, polyps can be detected and removed without an abdominal surgery. Colonoscopy is much more accurate than an x-ray exam of the colon to detect polyps or early cancer. Frequently, polyps can be removed at the same time, a major step towards the prevention of colon cancer.
Colonoscopy appeared to greatly reduce the risk of colorectal cancer, particularly among moderate-risk patients.
